Clay, Care, and Clean Water: Reviving a Legacy for Health
Adequate access to clean drinking water continues to persist as one of the most pressing issues in rural India. Millions of residents within such areas not only have to scout for water on a day-to-day basis but also rely on unsanitary sources when it comes to consumption. In a report published by NITI Aayog in 2018, researchers discovered how approximately 600 million people in India are faced with high to extreme levels of water stress with an alarming 70% of the country’s water supply being contaminated.
millions of people across India stand to benefit from the project, gaining access to clean, cool, and safe drinking water, alongside the economic uplift for local artisans involved in making these filters. As the initiative grows, so will its impact, creating both health and economic benefits for rural populations.

An issue like this not only has adverse outcomes on public health but also contributes to continuing the cycle of poverty and socioeconomic challenges for individuals from underserved areas. In these communities, addressing such a water crisis is equally about providing more water as it is about guaranteeing the water’s safety and sustainability. Several traditional water sources like wells, lakes, and rivers are extremely polluted and cause widespread waterborne diseases in those who rely on them. Studies show how diseases like cholera, dysentery and more can significantly be reduced with the availability, treatment and storage of safe water. This only further emphasizes the urgent need for tailored solutions.
Acknowledging the same, Adopt A Filter was founded in June 2024 to increase access to clean drinking water in a way that is both; locally relevant and sustainable. By integrating new-age filtration technology within traditional Indian clay pots or matkas, the project looks forward to addressing the dearth of clean water through an affordable, culturally and environmentally
Unlike other filters, our product embraces tradition. In rural India, water is often stored in clay pots (matkas).
By merging advanced filtration technology with these pots, we offer a more affordable and efficient solution.
